Genetic Engineering: The Future of Medicine

This project involved designing a folded educational pamphlet on the topic of genetic engineering, with a focus on making complex scientific concepts more accessible to a general audience. I selected this subject because of its fascinating potential in medicine, paired with the challenge of simplifying its intricacies through clear design and layout choices.

Folding Structure

The pamphlet is composed of six folded sections. When closed, sections 1 and 6 are the front and back covers, while sections 2 through 4 are the inside contents. Flipping it over when fully unfolded reveals section 5. The diagram to the left is provided here to help visualise how the piece transitions from a compact pamphlet into the large-format poster.

Intro & Timeline

The inside starts with two intro pages that explain the basics of genetic engineering, using examples like selective breeding in dogs to make the concepts feel more relatable. This leads into an illustrated timeline of key discoveries in the field, with icons helping break up the information and keep things engaging.

The Poster

When fully unfolded, the pamphlet becomes a full poster focusing on CRISPR and how it could be the key to treating some of the world’s most serious diseases. The poster breaks down CRISPR’s 7-step process with clear illustrations, helping simplify how gene editing works. At the bottom, I included a list of diseases that could potentially be treated with this technology to show why it matters. I chose a limited colour palette of greens and blues to keep things consistent and to give the whole piece a clean, medical feel.

Design Inspiration

I was inspired by YouTube channels like Kurzgesagt, which simplify complicated topics through engaging visuals—something I kept in mind when approaching both the layout and illustration style.

This project was all about guiding the viewer through the information. Starting with the basics and building toward the bigger picture, ending with the bold, detailed poster.
